Choosing a Retirement Home in North Carolina

North Carolina is a beautiful state. If you have lived here for most of your life, or if you are considering retiring to North Carolina, you already know this. As you approach the age at which it is time to find a retirement community, you have some important decisions to make. You need to decide when to leave your home and trade it in for something more manageable. Selecting the location and the facility to move is one of the biggest decisions you will make.

Whether you have always lived in North Carolina or you are just considering your options for moving there, you will not be disappointed by living your golden years here. From the coastal areas and the Outer Banks to the central Piedmont region and the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains in the west, North Carolina has something for everyone. The landscape is varied and lovely and offers residents and visitors opportunities swimming, biking, hiking, golfing, and many other outdoor activities.

If you have selected North Carolina as your new home, you will next have to choose a facility or retirement community. There are plenty of them to consider and the decision is an important one. There is much to think about when narrowing down your options.

The first thing to do is to decide where in the state you would like to live. The mountains in the west are beautiful and the culture of the area is interesting and diverse. The city of Asheville is a great place to live, but you will need to be aware that it does snow there and that it is not very close to any major airports.  The Piedmont has several nice towns, such as Pinehurst, and the area is great for those who love to golf. The coast of North Carolina is very long, which means there are plenty of waterfront properties.  The Outer Banks are lovely, but the area attracts lots of tourists and is vulnerable to hurricanes.

Once you have narrowed down your location, it’s time to start thinking about specific aspects of retirement homes. 

Facilities and communities for seniors are diverse in their services offered and living styles. Start your selection process by listing what is important to you in your new home. Think about the services you hope to have, how much assistance, if any, you will need, and what level of social activities you want to have access to. Some retirement homes include all services a senior might need, while others are simply communities in which homeowners must be of a certain minimum age.

One of the most important considerations you will make when selecting your retirement home in North Carolina is cost. You must be sure that you select a facility that fits your budget. Take a detailed look at your finances and get someone to help you with it if necessary. Come up with a number that represents the maximum that you can afford per month to spend on housing and services. As you investigate different facilities, find out what that monthly cost will be to you. Be sure that you find out what services cost extra so that you can get an accurate picture of that monthly expense.

When you have narrowed your choices down to a few facilities, spend time visiting them more than once. It is important to get a feel for each spot and talk to residents to find out if it is really the right place for you. If you take the time to search carefully for your North Carolina retirement facility, you can live well and happily.
